It's no secret: the Divas division has become a bit of a joke in the WWE. With so much talent on the main roster and in NXT, it's unfortunate that Divas matches have turned into regular bathroom breaks for viewers. Losing fan-favorite AJ Lee to retirement also left a big void. Here's some thoughts on how the WWE can revamp the division and keep fans in their seats:
Fresh Meat: The last Diva to move up to the main roster and get a significant push was Paige. Her move can be deemed as successful, looking at the fan reaction as well as her several title reigns. It's been over a year since she hit the main stage and WWE hasn't capitalized on that success yet by doing the same with other wrestlers. Emma moved up fairly recently, but her promotion was marred by an arrest and a poor gimmick that didn't translate to the main roster. It's time to infuse some more young talent in the roster. Charlotte lost her NXT title recently and could bring some much-needed new blood to the division. Sasha Banks, the current champ, also seems to have what it takes to be successful on the big stage. It's time to give some of these young divas a chance.
Focus on Talent: Natalya and Naomi are two of the most technical wrestlers on the roster right now. Unfortunately recently they've taken a back seat to some of the more 'visually appealing' talent, playing second fiddle to their husbands and hardly ever getting ring time. There has been speculation that Naomi is in line to take the Divas Championship, but WWE has flipped the script before. Sure the Bella Twins are nice to look at, but that can only go so far in regards to entertainment. I'm not sure why the roster has swayed more towards looks than talent, but it's done a disservice for the division.
Better Storylines: Not only have the recent storylines in the Divas division been poor, but they've been pretty much non-existent. There wasn't much (if any) buildup to the WrestleMania match between the Bella Twins and the Anti-Divas and that showed in the lack of fan interest. There was the short-lived beef between Brie and Stephanie McMahon a while back, but that didn't really amount to anything substantial. WWE needs to take the time to develop storylines within the division. They have a golden opportunity to capitalize on the Total Divas plot as well. Natalya - Summer Rae feud anyone?
Diva Search: There has been talk of Diva Search making it's return on WWE Network. The competition show hasn't aired since 2007 and could create some much-needed buzz in the division.... if the stakes are high enough. If the WWE can find a way to incorporate it into the regular televised events, it might help peak fan interest. To reiterate my 1st point, it's time for some new blood in the division.
Regardless of what direction WWE decides to take with the Divas division, it's becoming more and more evident that change is needed. As the wrestlers themselves have been harping lately, it's time to give divas a chance.
